What is Functional Rehabilitation?

Major Chiropractic in Wheaton offer a wide range to treatments in the field of sports medicine. One of these is Functional Rehabilitation. This is a relatively new field in sports medicine that seeks to treat not just the injury but the biomechanics behind the injury. Functional rehabilitation is very useful in treating chronic pain as well.

What is Functional Rehabilitation?

Instead of treating only the symptom of the injury, functional rehabilitation looks for the source of the injury and treats that too. A great example of this is back pain. When you experience back pain it is often because another mechanism in the body is misaligned or not functioning properly; maybe the hips are tilted, the foot is tilted in or out, or maybe you have an undiagnosed leg length discrepancy.

Functional rehabilitation would look for these mechanism problems and treat them as well as the symptom of back pain so that not only will you be back in the game, but you’ll stay in the game. Functional rehabilitation also used techniques found in traditional physical therapy. Two of these techniques are strengthening and stretching. Combined these elements with functional rehabilitation and the result is a resetting of your biomechanics. Your muscles will be strengthened to hold your hips or back or shoulders in the proper positions so that chronic pain will be lessened or even banished. When this happens you may find yourself able to participate at a higher level than before.
